Wellington, last night. Mr Merchant, who rotiros from the position of Survoyor-Genoral at the end of Juno next, has boen granted loavo of absonco from Saturday next. His ponsion will be £SOO a year. He will bo succeeded by Mr T. Humphries, Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands in Canterbury. Mr W. C. Kensington, under-secretary for Crown Lands, is to have full administrative control of the Land and Survey Department from April Ist.
