THE LICENSING ELECTION,

THE OFFICIAL DECLARATION.

NO-LICENSE PARTY OBTAIN MAJORITY.

! The official declaration for the elec-' ! tion of a licensing committee for the district of Waiapu is announced by the Returning Officer, Mr G. J. A. Johnstone, and the final figures somewhat alters the result previously given. The recount improved the position of Mr J. Tombleson, who displaced Mr A. Dewing by six votes. The official return secures the election of four nolicense candidates and one license representative, the figures being as follows W. H. Tucker 1501, G. E. Darton 1364, John Somervell 1327, Duncan Hepburn 1317, John Tomble» son 1314, Alfred Dewing 1308. J. A. Caesar 1249, James East 1227, A. H. Wallis 1226, James Whinray 1164 informal 134; total voters 2863.

The result of the election can hardly be taken as any criterion of the feeling in the district. There are between 8000 and 9000 voters on the roll, and the recount showed that only 845 voted for the no-license ticket and 705 for the license ticket. The rest of the votes were of a miscellaneous character, the personality of the candidates being the chief point considered. There were very few plumpers. We understand that despite the result of the poll, it is the intention of the parties interested to make the usual applications for conditional licenses for stook sales, raoe meetings and sports gatherings. 1
