WATER SUPPLY.

MR HAY’S REPLIES,

Mr Hay writes as follows from Dunedin on March 18th :— 11 la accordance with the request of your Council I beg to submit written replies to the various questions placed before me by the Mayor and Councillors Lysnar Bnd Whinray at a meeting of the Connoil held on the 7th inst. “ The Mayor.—(l) Lead pipe house | connections are provided for, but galI vanised iron oould be substituted, but I do not reoommend that the altoration should be made. ‘‘(2) The pressure at Giads'oue when tho draw-cff takes place will be about 701bs to the square inch, and 1721ba to the square inch when there is no leakage or draw-off. “Or Lysnar.—(l) With regard to this request I must respeotfully deoline to report. "(2) 1721bs to tho square inoh (as per answer to the Mayor’s question No. 2), and Ido not think the pressure will be excessive. ‘ (3) The scbome is designed as stipulated by tho ratepayers. “ (4) It is proposed to plaoe the reservoir in Whataupoko near tho late residence of Mr Simeon. This matter has already been fully reported upon. “(5) Thickness of p’pas ia prorent scheme same as now specified, Hessian covering is an additional item. “ (6) I think the work should be carried out for tbo £71,000 mentioned, if there has been no special rise in iron or steel. “(7) I have nq expetienoe of the wooden pipes, and I scarcely think that there would be any appreciable saving in I using them for high pressure work in lieu of cast iron. I 11 (8) Too charge for plans and specifications to contractors will be £5 5i eaoh oonlraot, but the contractor is at liberty to make his own copios from the contract plans and specifications. “ (9) It would be an advantage to hava a main on both aides of Gladstone road from Grey street to the post offiee to avoid cutting up tho road for house oonneotions, but the oost would be increased by about £3OO. '■ (a), (b), (o) These questions are already answered in so far as they refer to tbp work under my charge. _

11 Cr Whinray,—(!) With regard to pollution, the collecting area is, f understand, all bußb, and there should not be* discoloration rf any importance. All water supplies ore more or less affected by floods, but as the proposed inlet is above all polluted creeks there is every hope of the mpply being of good quality. '* (2) A combined oonlract for the supply

of the pipes and laying is, I think, likely to prove most desirable in the Counoil’s interest?.

“ At a meeting bold on the 7th inst, I was right in my reoollection of the height of 400 ft above Gisborne ; the 443f’» on the plan is the height of the pressure tank above the datum lino on whioh all the levels are based."
