WOMEN’S CONVENTION.

(Per Press Association.) Groymoutb, last nght. Ai tho Women’s Christian Temperance

Union to-day, Miss L. M. Smith having been appointed editor of tho White Ribbon ► and Mrs H. Hill business manager, a resolution was passed heartily thanking Miss Smith for the excellent work done by her in the dual oapacity, aud attributing the sucoess of the paper largely to her efforts. It was resolved, " That we emphatically protest against the notion of tho Colonial Secretary in granting charters for tho sale of inloxioating liquors to olubs at Masterton, Feilding, and Hastings, when all these distriots recorded a majority vote in favor of no-lioense ”; "that the Imperial Government be urged officially to discountenance the traffic in opium.” Mrs Whitby’s report of the work among seamen showed that the Danedin and Timaru Unions own the Sailors’ Rests in their respective distriots. The report of home meetings was received, Miss Webb presented the report of the purity work, very favorable aooounts being given of Mr G. H. W. Bligb’s work. An able paper, entitled "Women on’Chariiable Aid Boards,” was read by Miss Robert, who moved, and the Convention carried, resolutions affirming the desirability of public institution for the care of men, women, and children being governed by boards composed of both men and women ; that seperato homes should be established where men and women destitute of sexual control may be detained and oared for mentally and physically, and that such homes should be iu the country, where rural occupation could be provided; also expressing appreciation of the report of Mr Bishop, 8.M., in the recent Waltham Orphanage inquiry.
