A writer In tho Ohrislohuroh Proes, referring lo the boom in land speculation and building in Christchurch, utters a note of warning, and goes on tosay:— '* Our town reoeivos a muoh smaller share of Canterbury’s produots than she used to do, as the bulk of the Ashburton trade is taken to Tirnaru. Now, I aver unless the West Coast railway is hurried rn and completed, thus making a terminus of Christchurch, there is a probability that Ohristohurch will become unto Tirnaru the same in proportion as Kaiapoi is to Cbrißteburoh to-day, as vessels are not likely to steam 32 miles out of their way on the off chaneo of acquiring a oargo, as at present is the oase at LytieltoD, when they can run into Tirnaru and other similar ports in their lino of Bteaming and pick up sufficient for their requirements.”
