ELECTRIC POWER.

GOVERNMENT DESIRE A MONOPOLY.

.(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night,

The Government has now definitely refused to grant a lioense for the nee of water at Horahora to develop eleotrio power. They propose to oommeDpe operations before long at tbe Huka Falls as a generating station for tho North Island, and do not wish for competition from any other power plant. The result of the rtfusal is that power from Huka Falls will ocst double what it would at Horahora, and which makes it prohibitive for cheap power. The Waihi company has therefore been forced to abandon its- scheme for treatment of low-grade ores. ■ '■
