A fire is burning on the extensive area of flax lands of tho Piako Swamp, and considerable damage has boon dono to tbe fl-x, which is the property of various owners. The fire has been burning for two days, but is believed now to be overcome. Fearing it would spread to other largo flax growing areas a largo number of men were employed to out a gnp a chain wide to pre7ont the flames Bpreading. This work was successfully completed, favored by the direction of tbe wind. The fire was contained within the original compass, though there was a narrow esoape. Considerable damage has already been oaueod, What appears to be large bush fires are burning south of the Thames.
