COLLAPSE OF A TOWER.

AT" strong southerly gale is blowing. Just before eleven o’olook one of the large lowers of the exhibition building collapsed completely. The whole of the tower structure is down. There were no fatalities, as, though men were working there this morning, they had plenty of warning of the impending collapse, and wore called off. The estimate of damage is not yet available, y

Later. —The gale this morning com pletely demolished one oi the two towers of the exhibition flanking the main entrance. The towers had reached a height of over 100 feet, bnt were in skeleton form, and'‘consequently at the weakest stage. Fortunately no men were employed on the oqinstedation of the towers to-day owing to the high wind. The authorities state that . ths'aooident does not neoessarily indicate any slfuotural weakness in . the building. The-Bullding Committee of the exhibition met and viewed the damage, and decided to take no steps until the arrival of the arohiteot, Me J. O. Maddison, who is expected to leave Wellington for Chrietohuroh to-night. One of tho Commisionars states that the mishap will not cause any delay in opening the exhibition. The amount -Gf._ damage. done is nob nearly so muoh as when part of the main building was wreoked recently. The oast of one of the towers complete is only about £SOO or £6OO.

(Par Press Association.') Obristohurob, last night.

The offioial exhibition report,states that all the available space a* provided io the original plans of the exhibition buildings has been applied for, bat the commissioners are arranging for a considerable extension of the building, so as to make provision for further applications. Mr D. 0. Mclntyre, travelling representative for the commissioners, states that Southland -will make a magnifioent show, and that at Gore the same enthusiasm prevailed. He regretted the apathy displayed at Dunedin, but attributed it to the faot that theoity has not been properly worked. So far plans are being prepared for tea rooms, smokiog rooms, ladiet' lounge, lavatory, etc , end tenders will be called for the ereotion of these buildings in a few days. Tenders are invited for the ereotion of dining rooms, supper rooms, corridors, eto., for the exhibition, and will be received at the offices, addressed to the Exeoutive Commissioners up to 4 p.m. on Maroh 14th. The latest date for reoeiving applications for spaoe is Maroh 31st, 1906. A comprehensive provincial exhibit from Hawke’s Bay will include wool, flax, meats, and (tanned fruits. The Premier has received oommunioationß from Mr F. W. Jackson, manager of the Union Steam Co , Sydoey, Mr E.-M Cox, of Burt, Ltd , Sydney, and Mr A. W Robinson, of tbs Age newspaper, Mel bourne, aooeptiog the positions of oommiS' eioners for New South Wales and Victoria respectively in oonnect’on with the exhibition. ; '< ■ ' Applications for the solo right to strike and sell medals within the exhibition must be reoeived at ChrUtchuroh by noon of Maroh 16th, addressed io the Executive Commissioners.
