The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, MAR. 6, 1900. CHINA’S OUTRAGES.
lif the Fjowery Land of tfte Far East, there has again occurred one of those fanatical attacks on the missionaries, resulting in the death of a number of those whose work was to preach the Gospel. These attacks on foreigners are eyer happening in China, and it i@ that an organisation is at work endeavoring to oust the foreigner. As further outrages are feared, America has troops in the Philippines in readiness, while the warships have been despatched to the several China stations.' By a timely display of force what may otherwise dovelop into mountains might be removed into the sea. It seems clear that the only true policy of England and America is to refrain from all manner of jingoism in dealing with China, and to support the existing political regime both against rebellion from within and against attack from without, but at the same time to make it clearly understood that China must | respect the position of’ British and American subjects resident in China. The Chinese authorities must also be taught-that thejr will have to pay, and pay through tho nosey if they or their underlings indulge'in the pastime of committing outrages on foreign subjects. The tariff for murdering mis- 1 sionaries should be made absolutely . prohibitory.
