'(Per Press Association.)

The Kiflo Ausooiation meeting opened , this morning in fine weather, with light variable wind, varying from n.trth-onst to south .west, and tboro is every probability of the breeze inoroasiDg during the forenoon. The total number of competitors is 430, there being 280 volunteers and 150 rifle club members. Oolonol Collins 13 in command, with Major Hughes and a largo number 1 f staff ofHoers assisting, > Oolonoi Collins, in welcoming a record briefly to the gren range, inoludiDg th AI re ad y the Go ffhisJiir'v. A rri: J. £I2OO, and tho lota lilrafej l ' l J ' iie il<lel U;2000, whioh will rendei jl |l ' 1< “• ' Test ranges south of th: pir High Wntunoed that no team would !aroh y rt.m. Ttslsley this year, the Governirsday, of tho opinion that it would be lay. 0 battnr to postpone the sonding of a foam till 1907. Owiog to tho New Zealand Exhibition Commissioners being upablo to offer a suitable range and facilities for tho next meeting being held at Ohristohuroh daring the Exhibition, Colonel Collins has suggested to tho Government that tho meeting here nsxt year bo a Federal one, with largely increased prize money, in order to attract competitors and teams from the Commonwealth. A feature of the present meeting is the number of young men Bhooting. General Babiogton visits tho oamp to- I morrow. As tho shooting progressed tho wind changed time after time, puzzling many, especially the younger shots. Ferrin. of Palmerston North, rang on the possible at 200 yards. Of those who have finished Moslem (Xaikoura), Monoreiff (Christohnroh P. 0.), Jack (Linwood), and Bait (Gisborne) have scored 34. Colonel Collins states that though the present intention of the Government is not to send a team to Bisley this year, if, however, there was aDy phenomenal shootiDg whioh would justify him in recommending the Government to send a teem it might be influenced to do so. Additional scores of 84 at 200 yards are : G. Hawthorne (Wellington), Butler (Wellington), andßusck (Nelson). Taking it altogether, tho sbootiog at 200 yards was not up to tho standard, which may perhaps be due to the large number of young shots; yot towards tho end of the range the wind, which had freshened, was very troublesome. Ooly 21 targets were used at 500 yards, and immediately the shooting began a quantity of earth fell iota the trenob, dieab'ing soven targets for half an hour. The wiod ohaoged at this range, opening with a left rear, and veering to the right. The —jhpoting so far as concluded at this range ‘ nas been very erratic. The ex champions competing at the meoting are : A. and W. Ballinger (Wellington), Ohing and Milroy (Nblsod), Hyde and King (Opaki), Biss (" Carbine ”), (Upper Hutt). At lunch the 500 yards range was not completed, but of those finished the highest Wore Hyde (Opaki), Sandford (Obristohurob), Fowlsr (Hawera) 38. As the men finished at the 500 yards they prooeeded to 600 yards, and of thoss who have oompletod the matoh the highest totals ace: Rsed (Poogaroe) 94, Balt (Gisborne) 93. Not a third of the competitors have finished at the iast range. The score of 99 won this matoh last year. Greeawood (Upper Hutt) also made 34 at 200 yards. Additional highest soorers who have finished the match are : Lyall Oreti) 92, Burford (Timarn) 90.
