HURRICANE AT TAHITI.
FIRST FOR THIRTY YEARS. (Per Press AsaociationO Auckland, last night. A private oablo reoeived via San Franck or states that a sovere hurricane struck Tahiti. Buildings were extensively dam aged. Donald and Edonborough suffered to the extent of £ISOO. Tho other damage is unknown. It is tho first hurricane in the group for 60 years. TEN THOUSAND LIVES LOST. SEVERAL ISLANDS DISAPPEAR. The steamer Maripaba, which has arrived at San Francisco, reports that a terrifle hurricane on the night of February 7th devastated Tahiti and Tuamatu Islands. Ten thousand are reported to have boen drownod, and five million dollars worth of damago done. The British aad American Consulates at Papieti wore wrocked. Five hundred British subjects need relief. Several islands disappeared.
