Mr Clarke objected to tho principal of remitting rates, and offered to contribute towards defraying the amount. Mr Whinray said it was a harl case, and he proposed that the amount bo remitted, which Cr Lysnar seconded. Mr Cla?k said ho did not raise objection in tho individual ctse, but want d to know where this sort cf thing would end. There were plenty of poor people who would like tbeir rates to be remi t»d. If they did it in one c.se, where were they to draw the lino'? The Chairman raid that each individual ciso had to be dealt with on its merits, and it rested w th the Beard to draw the line when they pleased. At tho Borough Council last night Cr Miller took oxcoption lo tho Works Cominitsco authorising tho ordering of tho Roebuck road bridge miterial without consuming tho Council. Cr Sheridan contended that ovorytbing had been done in a thoroughly busineeebke no inner. Cr Millar differed from that view; ho did not objeot to what iho committee had done, but bo did to the manner in which it was dono. In future in matters of this kind ibo Council should be consulted. Cr Sheridan said the authority could only bo given subject to the approval of the Counoil. Cr Millrr: Is that so? Wo know it is not so by the look oo tho faces of the Mayor and Clerk (Laughter) I am not objecting now, but do not want tho like done in tho future. Or Bright also agreed that the comnrttea had exceeded tbeir instiuctioue, Cr Ljsnar: I hops the Mayor won’t order the water'works in that way (Laughter.) Cr Harding : He m ; ght put in the reservoir. (Laughtsr.) Cr Lysnar: Ho might go back to Waihirere. (Laughter.) The act'on of the ojmmitles was confirmed. The Borough Council received intima tion last Digbt that twelve Mausers nnd threo Martiai Henri rifles had been allotted to Gisborne as trophies. They asked if tho Cjuncil would accept;them, and have ohotn placed in some suitable place. Cr Bright: Absolute rubbish. Cr Sheridan said they would ba inteio3ting trophies, and Cr Whioray agreed. Cr Bright: Only to be locked at?—rubbish. The Alayor said other plaoas bad sought to g t'cannoD ; they wore ouly to be 1 joked at, fs well as statuary and other thiogs. Cr Lysnar moved that the uffar be accepted with thanks. Ho said in time when they had a public museum thoso trophies would become very valuable. He moved that the Council also Bpply for four field pieces, as they had in Wellington and other plaoes, Cr Whinray amended the motion; ho could remember their having made applicat'on for these p : oecs. They were prizad throughout tho universe. Field pieces tukoa at Sebastopol were to be found in prominent places throughout the empire. Or Bright could not see any cause for jubilation. It had cost many millions to briDg a small psople into subjection, and tho eooner ihey forgot it the better, for it only reminded them of how far the British War Department was at fau't. He had no ob jection to obtaining field piocos. Cr Sheridan : Then what would you have dono with the rifles ? Cr Bright: Reluse to tuk9 them. The Mayor:.That is not seconded. The motion wa3 then carried, Cr Bright dissenting as far as the rifles were concerned. Cr Sheridau said- that some of the people who were speskiog that way ta’ked differently when the war was on—ho was dubbed a pro-Boer then.
