BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho ordinary weotiog of tho Oouuoil was held last uight. Present: TL’O Mayer (Mr J. Townloy), and Ora Whinray, Webb, Bright, Harding, Skoridau, Lysnar, Colley, Booh, and Miller. Goorgo Duuoan, tho Willows, wrote offoring to renew his contraot for delivering hay to tho abattoirs at T 1 l-ls per ton, —Accepted fer twelve months, Major Winter, O E , wro'.o asking that Desmond road bo taken over f.om Mr T G. Lawloss, iho road having been formed to the Council’s sUi-faction. It was a gruesome suggestion to have abattoirs, oeturtsry, aud iufeotious disc sues ward on the sandy ground on the Waikau io. It was timo to tsko notion iu tho matter, and ha uiovod that a oouuuitloc bo appointed to solcoi a sit?.
Cr Hireling called attention to tho numbar cf c.mmrttees alieady sot up. Too Mayor said it was neces "try to havo a placo uol too far from tho doctor?. Dr. DeLislo had selcctod tho sito as ono ho thought suitable. They had been having reports until it was necessary to havo a climax. In reply to tho Mayor, tho lospootor said tho plan was praotically ready now, aad thay woro en'y waiting for a section j to be seleoted.
Or Harding said ho had not approved of tho site, but a‘i tho objections had beon put to Drs. Mason and DoLislo, who said that tho site was suitable. It was as wo:I to havo the quosiion of sito vontilated. Cr Lysnnr said tho ward should havo beon up long ago, but it did not soom that thay had sufficient information to decide that night. Ho did not think tho site shoul d bo near the abattoirs. His own idea was that tho ward ooull be oroctod near the Old Men’s Homo.
Or Shoridan said it was not satisfactory to have tho ward half a-tuilo from tho abattoirs, it would not bo cioo to havo it close up to the poor old user. Cr Lysnar suggestad that tho sito on the Wainui might bo suitable. Ho had an opan mind on tho subject. Wnen they properly understood tho Waikuiae sito it might bo dssmsd suitable. Ho sooonded the motion of Cr Whinray. Or HardiDg said tho late Mr Cooper had put a tag on tho site ho had given, for a band rotunda.
Cr Lys oar said he thought tho hospital also bad a section there.
Or Bright said ho could soo no roison why tho Hospital grounds should not be used. Tney had only Id infectious cases iu two years, and yet ware asked to havo a furnished building and staff to bo kept up for an occasional case a case that would bo attanded by a doctor who would not go into isolaiiou for auy period. As long as he had a voico in tho tiiog ho would strongly assert that tho ward should ba in Hospital grounds. Tho Council had made a mistake in not appointing to tho Board of Trustsos someone who would bo amenable to tho wishes of tho Council in this matter, though ho was not r, fairing to the individuals. The Hospital Beard had tho easiest time of auy lucai budy ; they had simply to say ihoy wanted money for this and taat, and expected that it would be supplied. Tno Mayor said thß agitation had oomo from the Uuaiitabie Board originally., (Jr Miller said it Was time something should ue dviis, and after the discussion ibsj might expect sume.hiog to he done. Thoy had put the matter before them very respectfully, and the decision was left to the Council. . Or HardiDg also took exception to Or Bright's remarks, and assured them that there was no chanoa of getting tho ward on tho Hospital grounds. Cr Lyenar : I do not see why you should say that. , , , Cr Harding: Became thoy have already threshed the mattsr out, and ail the doctors oppose it. Cr Colley thought all members of the Charitable Aid Board should be included on the committee. . Cr Shoridan said that professional men had selected a site, and now they were sstting up a committee to judge. H they put the ward in tho town they should drop out the term " isolation.” They bad too much of this committee business. The motion was carried, Cr Saeridan dissenting, the committee to be Cril Bright, Whinray, Webb, and Lysnar, with members appointed by the County Council,
WATER WORKS, The Borough Solicitor gave an opinion that ths waterworks scheme was in accoruanco with the voting paper. It, was not compulsory to erect a reservoir at any time if a competent engineer stated it was not necessary, but the sum thus required should be set aside. He concluded by stating that the Council were acting well Wl Cr Sheridan’(to Cr Lysnar): That is a ka The Mayor 1 said they had also bad Mr Bell’s opinion that it was unnecessary to follow out overy detail. Cr Lvsnar : He says it is unnecessary to put in the provisions, but boiDg there they must bo followod. Ball’s The Mayor wont on to road Mr rj.n a ° P Cr°Millor: That does not matter. Tbo opinion of our own solicitor is very clear. ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE.
