There has been no genuine demand for a reduction either of direct taxation or of the Customs duties. The Colonial Treasurer would bo justified in maintaining the bases of his revenue, and the ; reasury receipts would probably increase as much in the next five years as they have in the past five. ■- Invercargill I imes. W. F. Massey, M. has been working off in his recent speeches a neat little Parliamentary story. Here it is :—A. lady, with a little boy, was sitting in the gallery when Mr Speaker commenced to read the prayers. j“ Do they pray for the members ? ” asked the innocent lad. “ No,” replied his mother, “Mr Speaker simply looks at the members’ faces and then prays for the country.” Of course, from Mr Massey’s point of view, the country will, for the next three years, need to be prayed for.—Observer. The men who suggestthe nationalisation of everything we eat and wear are excellent specimens of socialism. They wanted fifteen shillings a day to attend a Parliament that would not be worth fifteen pence to the remainder of the poople of New Zealand.—Greytown Standard. If Japan is now urging the free ad ■ mission of her subjects to all parts of the British Empire as a logical result of her alliance with that Empire on terms of equality, the peril of the colonies is grave indeed ; and New Zealand, at any rate, uill respond as one man to the appeal which Mr Seddon has made. —Wellington Post.
