W Auckland, last night.. house, destroyed by fire at Ponsonby, was insured for £5lO, and the furniture for £IOO. It was a total loss. The adjoining house, occupied by Parvan and Oollrick, was extensively damaged by fire and yaier, the loss being covered _by Insurances m the National and United Offices.

Wellington, last night. Mr Anduns, a resident of Adelaide ' road, formerly of Petone, died suddenly yesterday morning while attending service at St. Mark’s Church. Heart failure is said to be the cause.

. Otunafu, last night. A permanent School of Telegraphy for cadets was opened here this morning, under Mr P. Bevan. Twentyone learners from all over the colony ■were present, and more are to arrive. Mr Blackmore, Government pomologist, who some months ago superintended spraying operations in this district with the Government sprayer, •was here again on Saturday, and drove round. He found that in every where-spraying was effected while the potato plants were healthy, the blight has been held at bay completely. Mr Blaclcmore stated to a representative of the Mail that every single potato plant in the district practically which had not been sprayed was showing signs of the late or Irish blight. He further stated that spraying was quite useless in cases vmere the blight had' already appeared. Mr Blackmore delivers lectures in town and district immediately on the subject, under the auspices of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral. Association.
