GISBORNE'S WATER SUPPLY
QUESTIONS BY OR LYSNAR,
The Borough Council having at their last meeting decided that any Councillor should submit written questions to the Engineer (Mr Hay), the following have been framed by Or Jiysnar for Mr Hay’s considered opinion add written reply : h That the Eagineer be requested to report upon the advieability of taking a 9-inch main for half the distanoe and a 10 inch main for the balance from the souroe of the Te Arai water supply to g, reservoir to be located on the Arai Hills adjoining the’ fiats and about nine miles from town, at a sufficient height so as to give the required pressure and quantity of water, eto. Then to take a 14-inoh main from the reservoir to town so as to r ~ (a) Reduce the heavy cost of uaiog a much larger pipe for the first 12 Jot 13 miles, the supply in the reservoir which will accumulate at night making np for the reduoed size of pipe. (b) And to have a aupply in the reser-
voir on the town side of aoy dangerous ground which may cause a break in mains through slips or flood. 2. Also.to advise tbe pressure there will be iu town upon Mr Hay's scheme as' at present suggested to tbe Council, when there is praotioally no water being drawn through tbe'mains at night, and will it be an excossive pressure for tho ordinary water taps and fittmgs. to stand ? s 3 Will the scheme upon whioh tenders are now being oalled for be capable of supplying 1000 gallons per minute at 60ibe pressure per square icoh as stipulated by the ratepayers ? 4. Where dors Mr Hay propose putting tbo 60Q000 gallon reservoir as stimulated by the ratepayers 9 - - 1 5. In Mr Hay’s original estimate to the CouDei', did bo calculate for cast-iron pipes of equal thickness or weight to those now given in the specifications, and did he also allow for steel pipes to be of 12 gauge and hessian covered '?
6 Does Mr Hay consider that the work as now designed as per specifications, including the cost of a 500.000 gallon reservoir, and, siy, £4OOO for land, can be completed for the £75,000 as stipulated by tbe ratepayers ? 7. For Mr Hoy to re-port upon tbe advisability of using the American wooden pipes similar to those tbe Government have contracted for at Rotorua' and Hanpi r instead of cast iron or steel, aDd what would jibe ppbable cost of jtbe wooden pipes be as compared with the 'other's ? 8 In large works of this kincf is it usual to charge the cqntraotors for copies'of tbp plans and specifications as provided by the specifications, and what will the probable cost of same amount to 9 9. Would there bo an advantage in extendiog the main on both sides of the street in the centre of tho town, say, from Grey street to the Post Office, to save continually cutting up tho street in case of now oonneotions, bearing in mind that this portion of the street will in all probability bo asphalted'?
