Helen Marks, a middle-aged woman, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment by Mr Justice Edwards on charges of keeping a disorderly house and attempting to procure three girls for immoral purposes. Addressing the jury the Judge commented severely upon the City Council in granting prisoner a lodging house license saying it was a grave breach of public duty when the Town Clerk had the police report on the house under his nose.
New Plymouth, Saturday. A rumor that emanated from Wellington that the Ironsand Com-1 pany has been successfully floated in London, Mr D. Perry, one of the prime promoters, says is untrue. Ihe latest advice shows that the board of directors has been appointed, but no shares have been allotted.

This will upset the arrangements for the reception of the local representatives. Invercargill, last night. A sudden death occurred at Wright’s bush on Friday. Mrs Bott, an elderly widow, was walking towards the railway station when a passing settler offered to give her a lift in his trap. When stepping up she fell dead.
