RIVER WORKS.
MR LESLIE REYNOLDS’ REPORT. The members of the Harbor Board met Mr Leslie Reynolds on Saturday evening, and discussed with him matters pertaining to the river works before he reported on the same. The Chairman (Mr J. Townley) presided. Tho Chairman explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of seeing what progress Mr Reynolds had made. The Engineer bad not, however, had snffioent time to complete his investigations. Mr Reynolds had in company with himself visited Nelson Bros., and made a thorough inspection of the work dono at that end, bat as the Board had nothing to do with it, he did not know whether it was advisable to tay anything about it. Mr J. Clark thought the latter work was not one that called for mention from the Engineer, who was only concerned with the river improvements below the bridge. Mr Reynolds might report as to the suitability of the sand pump for the Board’s work. Mr Whinray thought that eufiioiont time had not been allowed Mr Reynolds to report.
Me Reynolds said he was prepared to [ give a straight out opinion in regard to the sand pump. He could not reoommeni the Board to purchase it, as it was unsuit' able for the work in vi6W. Mr Matthewson pointed out that Messrs Nelson Bros, required an answer from the Board as soon ae possible in regard to the sand pump. Mr Sievwright said the opinion reoeived from Mr Reynolds should settle the ques. tion of the Board purchasing the pump. Messrs Matthewson and Sievwright said the Board might mention to Mr Reynolds any matters regarding the river upon which they might desire him to report. They did not think the present was the time to cross-examine the engineer. A motion in this direction was proposed. Mr Roynolds said if the Board desired it he could.give a report inside of twentyfour hours in regard to the sand pump. Oiber matters pertaining to the river would tako a little timo, as he had a great deal of data to go through, He desired to g) fully into all mstters, and give the question of the river careful consideration, 'there were Btill a number of eouodings which he required, but these oould he supplied by the Board’s employees. Mr J. Clark desired information in. regard to the mud bank on the Kaiti side as to whether it should be cut away or simply cut across, also as to the advisability of getting the rock out of the river. Tbo Chairman thought that uo further mention should fco made of the sand pump until they received Mr Reynolds’ report. They oould hardly say they had deoided not to purchase the dredge. Mr Reynolds should, he thought, be l;lt perfectly free to report.
Me Hardiog risked for inform ition in refurenoo to tho sand comiDg round the gioyne.
Mr Reynolds said ho would make menI tion of the matters referred 10. In regard to the sand comiDg round the groyne he d d rot think his dicision would be in Mr Harding's favor. Mr Lysiur : I Bhould like Mr Reynolds to report on the John Townley. (Laughtor.) | The Cbaiiman : There is no necessity to do that; we are going to sell it. Mr Lysnar : I think wo ought to have a separate report on the dredge. Mr Clark : Wo are going to sell it. The Chairman J I would l:ke to move an amendment that Mr Reynolds finds a customer for it. (Laughter ) Mr Lysnar asked that Mr Reynolds should also report upon the question of berthage of vessels ai tho groyne, and generally as to how tho Board could make the best use of the rirer facilities.
It is expected that Mr Reynolds’ report will bo to band in about a fortnights t’mc,
