HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.

THE BLACK FAMILY. Lovers of both classical and popular mnaio were afforded a rare treat at His Majesty’s Theatre last night, when the famous Black Family commenced their Gisborne season. The operatio gems of orchestral and vocal music were performed in a highly cultured and refined style. Miss Nellie Black, who has an excellent s'ago appearance, is undoubtedly 'the artiste of the Bhow; her playing and vocalisation displays that “effect which is only gained by perfeot training and long study. The lady's even tonod mezzocoutralto was displayed ar.istically in 11 Last Dream,” which merited a double encore. In the second part of the programme Tosti’s “ Good Bye” received an excellent interpretation, and responding to a vigorous encore Mis* Black daintily saDg “ Lite’s Epitome,” an ideal encoro song. In the violin solo Saraßats’s ‘-Zigeunerweisrn ” Miss Black’s playing proved a revelation to a Gisborne audience. Miss Elsie sang several serio comic songs in a most refined style and at onoe created herself a favorile with tho audience. Mr Bert, who is a master of many instruments, delighted the audience with his instrumental sketch entitled “ Odds and Eods,” in whioh he easily managed to produce melodious harmony out of everything. Mr J. Black has a highly humorous sytie, and with Miss Nellie caused an abundance of fun in the musical sketches “ After the Honeymoon” and" Squabbles.” The whole company form an excellent orchestra, and special mention must be made of the mandoline quartette, which was repeatedly encored. The attractive programme is delightfully interspersed with a variety of national daDCO3 clsverly given with appropriate mufio and costumes.
