An oxoiting tragedy ooourred to day on the main thoroughfare of NewtowD, one of lha most populous suburbs, by which a policeman lost his life. The murderer killed himself after shooting at several of those seeking to capture him. The tragedy seems to bo the outoome of ktndnes3 and charity shown by a widow, Mrs Fenwick, and family some years ago to Tommy, a native of Tanna, New Hebrides. Tommy was allowed to oooupy a detaohod room. Ho wat kept in food, and picked np odd jobs. He became quarrelsome and threatened the family. The native purchased a revolver and a Winchester repeating rifleTommy demanded forty pounds which he said Mrs Fenwiok owod him. Then he drew his revolver and fired at Charles Fan wick. '

The weapon missed fire, and Charles Fenwiok retreated to the house, followed by the infuriated native. Fenwiok closed with the native and struggled to obtain possession of the rifle, which the native was now seekiDg to uso. Constable Maunsell returned the fire. * The Kanaka retreated to the front room and Constable Maunsell fired again. Several more constables arrived. -'One held out his helmet a few inobes leyond the door. Two shots landed mi. Constable Wallace was still alive, lying n the ball, where the Kanaka held comnand. Constable Charlton determined to resoae iValiace- Ho dashed in, seized Constable iVallaoe, and lifted him oat, expecting any noment to reoeive a shot. The niggeir locked himself in the kit-' ben. Three oonatables’ revolvers were levelled rbile one smashed tbe panel of tbe kit' hen door. The native fired point blank at Cons table CharltoD, but missed him. He ben fired two shots at Constable Truecott, be ballets going through bis tunic. The police fired a volley. One hit the igger on the shin, and another on the high. Constable Charlton then pushed tho oor open. The Kanaka retreated to the bathroom, lonstable Charlton following, and called □ him to surrender. Tbe murderer called out something bout money, adding that he was going 3 shoot himself, Then he fired a shot into his stomach, ying instantly. Altogether about twenty shots were red. Constable Wallace was found to have vo shots in tbe abdomen, and bis shooter was shattered by a third. He died on jaobing the hospital. An enormous crowd viewed the affair. The exoitement was intense.
