Ia 1882 the biithrate for New Zealand was 3732 pet 1000, ia 1889 it was 30, in 1894 it was 27’2. and in 1899 it sank as low as 25 1. It is true that New Zealand does not in tbrs respect stand alone among the Australasian colonies. In Queensland during the bst ten years the birthrate had fallen from 32 8 to 24 per 1000 ; in New South Wales it had fal en from 30 6 to 26 7 ; in Victoria fiem 28 5 to 24 6; and in South Australia from 30 2 to 24 - 8. But though New Zealand compares favorably enough with a'l the older Australian States, the fact remains that our annual increase in population is now about 10 per 1000 less then it was 20 years ago. And if we take into account the number of married women between 15 and 45, we find the position is even more startling, for whereas in 1878 the average f. uoily for each married ' woman within these ages limits was four, to-day it is only three—(Auckland Star.) Brisbane water-supply is so notoriously diity that recently a local cordial-maker advertised that not only did he refrain from using the fluid for the making of his cordials, hut also for the washing of his bottles {
