Alston Coleman), claim JGI6 2s 4d for gas fittings, was heard before Mr Barton, S.M. Tho question in dispute was whether an arrangement bad been made to do the work and supply the necnsßary material at cost price, or whether it was to be done #t tbe ordinary ruliDg rates. Defendants] maintained that tho prices were excessive, and that an arrangement had been made with the company’s foreman (Mr Arundel) to do the work at cost price. Evidence was given by tho defendants, Obas, Taylor* and Albert John Hodgson, as to an esti-il mate of £5 or £6 being given them.

At the Magistrate’s Court yoßterday Mr Barton, S.M, granted on application to defer the disputo between J. J. Holland (Mr Chrisp) and Mackroll and Colley to arbitration, Mr W. H. Clayton to be arbitrator, to give bis award within three weeks.

At the Polioe Court yesterday, George Olimo and Frank Bull, who had been having a rather lively time in town on Wednesday afternoon with a horse and gig, pleaded guilty to the charge, and Olimo waa fined £1 and ooets, Bull beiDg let off with half that sum. For ill-treating tho horse by whipping and furious driving, Olimo, who pleaded guilty, was Sued £2 and costs, and the charge against Bull was dismissed. Accused was remanded until tbo 16th inst on the application of the polioe. He was also remanded on a charge of etesl ng a horse, Baddle end bridle, valued at £l7, from the Albion stable?, and pony on January 10th, tho property of Wm. Brown, valuod at £6, from Te Kopi. At tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday, judgment by default was given in the following civil oases : —Sbiorlaw and Co. (Mr Arthur Coleman) v. Walter H. Mends, claim £5, costs £L os6d; Harry Sandlant (Mr R. U. Burke) v. John Somervell, claim JOB ss, costs 10s ; Jas. Rosie (Mr Chrisp) v. C. W. Moore, claim £2 2s lid, costs 10s ; Norman File (Mr Blair) v. 0, W. Moore, claim JE4 10s, costs 10s. Mr Burke, in the case Harry Sandlant v. R. Little, carpenter, applied for an order, on a claim of i 5 143. Defendant said he was paid 9s a day, but tho average per week only amounted to £2 Os a good deal of time being lost through wet weather and holidays. He had a wife and six children to keep, and had to pay 7s 6d per week rent. In reply to a question as to the value of the furniture, ho said if was ody worth £4. 105. Asked by His Worship, if he did not think it extravaganoe under suoh conditions to go in for stylish tailor-made suits, defendant said he thought at the time that his prospects were good.
