At the Ohaupo annual sheep fair 16,000 sheep were yarded. Fat lambs brought to 14s Gd. There was a rise all round on last year’s prices, this being especially noticeable in breeding ewes. Napier, last night. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company cable :—“ No improvement in frozen meat market. Prices are unchanged.” Wanganui, last night. A meeting of the Christmas Carnival Committee last evening decided to hold another carnival next Christmas, and a sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter of arranging now attractions for the function. The recent carnival resulted in a profit of £l2B. Miss C. McKenny, assistant matron of Wellington Hospital, has been appointed matron of Wanganui Hospital, Wolliogton, lasi night. The flagship Powerful and other vessels of the Australian squadron arrived in port this morning. Concerning the drop in the price of butter on the Homo market, Sir Joseph Ward doesn’t think it will be permanent, and iadds that when at Home he intends to make special inquiries into the matter, with a view to getting at the real foundation of the troubles, and to preventing, if possible, a continuation of the evil. The Finance Committee of the City Council, reporting on the AuditorGeneral’s complaint as to improper bookkoeping and mistakes in accounts, state that the accounts as published do not set forth the position of the Corporation in a manner enabling its true financial position to be easily arrived at. Whilo not laying great stress on the Auditor’s “ tags,” they make suggestions for dealing with the accounts differently, and supply a statement on the lines they suggest, which shows the annual expenditure last year excoedod the income by £7765.
