MASTER BAKERS.
(Per Press Association.) Wanganui, last night,
The annual Conference of the New Zealand United Master Bakers and Industrial Association of Employers commenced this evening. Delegates are present from Wellington, Dunedin, Auckland, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Wanganui, Manawatu, and Taranaki. The Executive’s report for the year was . read and adopted.
The Da’ry Department is this year making test 3 of the keeping qualities of New Zealand butters on rather a larger scale than was attempted last year. If a consignment of butter coming forward for grading attracts attention as likely to deteriorate bofore reaching the London market, a box is secured and kept in the cool store for two months, under conditions resembling as closely as possible those of the voyage Hem?. It is then opened up and examined, and any chaDge of condition is noted, tbe repo.t aoting both as a oheck on tbe grading, and an in dication to the faotory of the necessity for a remedy. Samples of butter which shows no defects are also taken for similar testing. The factories in all cases are showing themselves willing to meet the Department in the matter. It may be mentioned that Denmark pays something like £2OOO a year on account of deprecia* tion of samples taken for these tests. Nance O’Neil had only six hours in Honolulu on her way from Auckland to Sao Francisco, and she utilise! half the time in giving a morning performance of “ The Fires of St Jotm."
It is not quantity of population that Maoriland need?, but quality—the sort thEt will go back to undertake pioneer wotle, not those who will add to tbe crowd that are eoeking a miscellaneous living haogiDg about the cities aod joining tbe Socialist push who all tbe time want something for nothing.
