ORPHANAGE SCANDAL.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. The Waltham Orphanage inquiry was continued to-day. Norris, the secretary, said the cost of maintenance of inmates was £2 5s 8d a month so far as pensioners were concerned.
Tbe Commissioner commented on the inclusion of funeral expenses in the estimate. Such expenses could not be said to form part of the inmates’ maintenance.
Norris said he did not know how else to charge them. With regard to the children, he strongly favored a boarding out system as against cottage homes. Later.—Mr Morris, secretary to the Charitable Aid Board, continuing his evidence, dented that he dominated the Board as alleged by Mrs Wells, or thet “ Mrs Wells had deliberately been kept off the institution's oommittee. He was firmly convinced that Mrs Wells had been actuated by a desire to get him out of his position. There was no systematic inspection of tho orphanage. The matron had practically a free hand. He thought 7s 6d a week was a fair charge for boarded out children, seeing that the Government’s regular payment was 7s weekly. The enquiry wa3 adjourned till 10.8 Q lO'day,
