.(Per Press Association.) New Plymouth, last night Mr Hutchinson, S.M., gave judgment this morning in cases in which several bookmakers were charged with betting on a public reserve at the Christmas races, Flanagan, Rae, Conway, and' McAnally were each fined 40s and costs. Two other cases were adjourned for three weeks in order to give an opportunity of appeal, . Wellington, last night. The Government have decided upon the appointment of Mr T. H. Hamer as Under-Secretary for Mines, in succession to Mr H.'Elliott, and Mr P. S. Hay, at present superintending engineer to the Public Works Department as Engineer-in-Ohief, vice Mr W. H. Hales, and of Mr P. J. Kegan as Chairman of the Wellington Conciliation Board. The training ship Sparrow will shortly be placed in commission. Capt. G- S. Hooper, R.N.8., formerly chief officer of the Hinemoa, has been given command.
