The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JAN. 29, 1906. IMPORTANT ROADS.

In another column we give an interesting article from the Waikato Argus on the subject of road connection between Gisborne and Waikato. The importance of the subject is self evident, and the article should also impress upon the people of this district the necessity for alertness in regard to inter-district communication. Prom enquiries we have made WA finrl tJhftf. fill A Aroma infnrmofinn an

we nna mat tae Argus mtormation as to routes is lacking in completeness, but the fact is that even in this district there is a great want of knowledge as to the possibilities of communication by road, and the sources of wealth awaiting development. '1 he Waikato journal is of opinion that to go to Waikaremoana from Gisborne it is necessary to go via Wairoa, and under present circumstances that belief is, perhaps, justifiable. But it so happens that Mr W. Douglas Lysnar has just returned from a visit to Waikaremoana, and a representative of the Tutus having sought information from him as to the real condition of things in the matter of routes, we will be able in a later issue to supply some details that will surprise many people, and which, we believe, will-lead to bodies

like the Chamber of Commerce and other local organisations joining in an effort to bring Gisborne into much closer touch with Waikaremoana ; to seek to have the grandest scenic area in New Zealand made so easily accessible that it will not only become a great tourist resort, to the great advantage of both Gisborne and Wairoa, but will become a very popular holi-day-making place for the people throughout the district. To reach Waikaremoana at present one must travel via Frasertown and climb steep grades that can be avoided with a reasonable expenditure of money. When visiting the vicinity of Wai karemoana Mr Lysnar went to some trouble to obtain information on the subject of roading —as to what had been done, and what is necessary to reduce the distance between Gisborne and the magnificent Lake, and in good time we will give that information for the benefit of the public, on whose behalf we thank the Waikato journal for the movement set on foot for closer communication by road. It inspires us with the belief that the Waikato representatives can be relied on for support in any efforts made to break down the existing barriers bet ween this district and our neighbors further north.
