SUMMER SCHOOL.
TECHNICAL EDUCATION. t —4 The Governor opened the teachers’ summer school at Auckland on Monday morning, there being about 150 teachers present. These teachers went to Auokland to put in a fortnight of training in drawing subjects under the instruction of the director of technical education and his staff, and those who put in practically the whole of the time are allowed a week’s extra leave and certain other small privileges in consideration Df their attendance. The Chairman of the Board Baid the intention was to give the teachers in outdistricts who oould not be reaohed by the Board’s technical instructors an opportunity of increasing their knowledge of the technical subjects that occupied so important a position in the Bjard’s work. He • hoped soon to welcome to Auokland the principal of tbe training oollege which the Board had decided to establish. That college was intended to give proper training tc .—teachers, it being realised that it was essential that teachers should have a good, solid foundation to their knowledge. Th( enthusiasm of the teachers throughout the province for technical education was e _ mo3t gratifying feature, and he regrettei that an adequate buildiog for teaohin! had not been eree'ed in the city. His Excollenoy said he wa3 glad tba assistance was being given in the shapo o a training college for the teachers. Ihal to his mind, was tho most import in thing they could have, for, of ooursi teaohers required systematic training, ]us the same as persons engaged in other pre fessious, and particularly was this the cas with teachers who wore obargod wit teaching primary education, which had I bo the foundation upon which seconds and university education was built. c was g’ad that the board bad ohosen man of wide experience in the woi for the po3ition of principal 01 ti now college, because, although son might thiok that local men shiuld have been considered, still, in the foundation of a new establishment such as this, which would have such a very groat mfluenco on teachers and tho clus. of teaching they would impart, it was ossoniial thatt tbe head of th,t institution should be » person of wide experience m the work to be done. He had some knowledge of such a DOsition, for in his own somewhat detracted country, Ireland, ‘hero was latelv started a Department of Agricultural Technical Instruction. There was a tromendous outcry bicicso the Government chose instructors from flQßn|'“on the E score D of Their superior ShS' 10 “ lone: Q9t ßut it - sfers SMSS thusUsm of N 0 0a 1 ao'der s wouldl make this Auokland training college turn out the finest teachers in the oolomes.
