Jan. 23i'^ News has been received that a -'Frefltfh column of 400 surprised a hrga body of Chinese regulars, pillaging at Tonking villages. A three hours’ battle ensued. Tho Chinese bad 300 killed and 300 i wounded, and tho French 49 killed, and the commander seriously wounded.
