FLORENCE LLOYD’S ADVENTURE. ' • * Miss Florence Lloyd, of the Stand Comedy Company, bad an unusual experience after leaving Gisborne. Recently the Waihi Company announced that no ladies would be permitted to visit the underground workings. A lady had fainted whilst descending the shaft in the cage, and when Miss Lloyd and party arrived at the Waihi mine the nature oi the adventure was made known. Miss Lloyd, however, was boot upon inspecting the Waihi mine, having been underground, in a Ballarat mine. Thereupon she procured from the mine office a suit of miner’s dungarees, hob-nail boots, and a slouch felt hat, end retired to a back room, from whence she soon oame forth attired in the whole rigout, having all the appearance of ma’e visitor. Arriving on the braoe Where the cages descend, some nDxiety wrs felt lest the braoemen should dieoov, r Miss Lloyd’a ruse, but no challenge followed. The cage then descended to the lowest level (No. 8). After inspecting the workings there the visitors ascended to No. 7 level, and went into ooe of the slopes of the Martha reef. This had to be accomplished by means of two sets of steep ladder ways on the vertical side. On the shift ohamber at No. 7 level one of the shift bosses remarked sharply to the leader of the party: “ That’s a woman ; women are not allowed down here.” The leader, however, replied: “ Can’t you see that she’s a man?” The subjeot then dropped, and a safe asoent made to the surface.
