ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
.(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night.
Alexander Allen, a railway employee, who was run over by a train at Petone recently, necessitating amputation of the foot, has died in the hospital. A middle-aged man named Robert [ Parkinson, employed by the Tourist Department, dropped dead this morning. Deceased served in South Africa with one of the contingents. Christchurch, last night, Mrs Louisa Finnerty was run over by a steam tram in Moorehouse Avenue this morning. Both her legs were smashed and her body mangled. She was removed to the hos pital in a dying condition.
Invercargill, last night. Matthew Galt. 26 years of age, caught cramp while bathing in Mataura river, and was drowned.
Oamaru, laat night. The Oamaru Mail learns from private letters particulars of Matthew Galt’s drowning at Mataura on Tuesday night. It appears that five young fellows, including dec3ased, went for a bathe in the river. Galt got into trouble. Three of- his companions were bathing about the same spot, Frank Denny, George Francis, and Clearwater, but they were unable to get deceased out till another mate, Ernest Cameron, arrived from town. Cameron dived in and got Galt aehore. They worked for three hours at the body, but unfortunately without result. Port Chalmers, last night. Henry Lees, fireman on the s.s. Karamea, fell over tho George street pier, whilst under the influence of drink, and was drowned last night.
