Sydney, Jan. 18. The week’s wool sale closed strong. The demand was firm at full rates. Melbourne, Jao. 18. Hides : There was keen competition for all c'asses. New Zealand was eagerly sought after. The market Bhows a further improvement on last week’s enhanced rates. As to tallow there is no report.

Bank of New Zealand shares are 3t 7£ to 7|. At the wool sales the various firms offered 10,846 balep, a representative selection. There was a large at'eudanoe and good competion for all qualities. Prices generally . were unchaDged, though the finer crossbreds, which the Americans .are buying, were occasionally a Bhade firmer. At the. tallow sales 1072 casks were offered, and 779 sold. Mutton fine is at 33j 6d, medium 27s 63, beef fine 295.6 d, medium 275. - : . Later— The wool sales are brisk. There was good competition at the second day's auctions. Shabby merinos are barely up to last Ea'e’s rates.

There was an inorease in the yarding of sheep, about 4700 coming forward, mostly young stock of good quality. Messrs Dalgety and Co. end Common, Shelton and Co. received the following prides : 13 small lambs 6s BJ, 36 ewes mixed ages 48 lambs Ss 23, 78 old ewes 6j lid, 138 two-tooth wet,hors 12s Id, 140 ewos 12s lid, 118 lambs 8s Id, 107 ewes'.: 5 * 9s 6i. Williams and Kettle and the New Zoaland Loan and Mercantile: 20 fat wethers 14% 3500 lambs 10s, 125 fat and forward wethers 13s 2d, 62 two and fours tooth wethers 11s Id, 83 prime fat ewes 11s, 113 fat and forward ewes 8s Id, 47 fat lambs (shorn) 9s 7d, 17 fresh fuli«inouth Romney rams 2Jgs. Pigs—There was only a small entry of pigs, which said as under—3 well-bred weanera 12s 6d, 1 youog sow (empty) 23d, 3 weanors 11s, 3 porkers 13s 6d.

ANIMATED WOOL SALES.

(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. The second wool sales were going on tonight ; 7462 bales being offered, and very few lots passed in. Buyers were very numerous, and there was keen competition. The wool was in much better order and condition than at the first sale, and this accounts for the advance of halfpenny to a penny on ordinary crossbred. Belter crossbreds were keenly competed , for, but did not show tho same advance. Halfbroda of good quality brought up to the last sale’s rates, and bellies and pieoes were halfpenny to three farthings better, jtf Half-bred made IOJd to Hid, fine cross- r bred lid to 12d, ordinary to IQfd, if matted ditto. BJd to 9|d, bell’es 7d to B£d,._ pieoes 6d tc lOd.
