WELLINGTON NEWS.

(Per Press Association.)

Wellington, last night. A despatch has been received from the Seorctary of State for the Colonies, pointing out that British and colonial traders may be placed et a great disadvantage

ovying to the provisions of the trade marks law in the Argentine Republic, and exporters of goods will do well to lose no time in scouring registration of their marks id that country. According to tbe law of the Republic, a person not necessarily being the real otvner of a trade mark, but having registered that matk in the Argentine, can-lay au embargo on any goods he may find bearing that mark, although such goods may have been made by the original owner of the mark • and have been legili-

mately introduced into the country. It is „! staled that a Canadian firm which had fe/j been selling foe some years nadir a special mark now iiods it may not import its owa goods into the Argentine under that mark, beoause it hasbeeo registered by a firm of importers in Buenos Ayre 3 , and no remedy appears to exist for the original owners, except to buy up the looal registered owners or invent or push another mark. The Magisterial inquiry into the disaster to the seow Oban at the entrance to Wei lington harbor on 31st December, which resulted in the captain and two members of the crew being drowned, eommenoed to day. The question to be considered are the stability and seaworthiness of the Oban, and whether the casualty was in any way due to negligence on the part, of either those aboard the tug Duco, whioh was towing the seow at the time of the accident, or of those on board the Oban.
