A young man named William Lovett wa3 sentenced at the Supreme Court to two years’ imprisonment with hard labor on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape. Mr Brindley, general manager for New Zealand for the State Fire Insurance Department, has arrived in Sydney, and returns to the colony on the 20th by the Sonoma. Auokland, last night.

The Tokatea hotel, at Coromandel, has been destroyed by fire. It was occupiedby Ohas. McFarlane, licensee, and owned by L. D. Nathan. On behalf of the lecturers in the School of Commerce, Mr Grosman reported to the-Auckland University College Council that an amount of public interest had already been aroused in tho school, and the number of students attending j ustified hopes for the future success of the institution. The lecturers suggested that certificates and diplomas be granted by the College in connection with tho school; that annual examinations be held, aud that certificates be issued on results ; aDd that the Council should consider the advisableness of establishing an associateship on the lines of the School of Music. The suggestions were referred to a committee.
