The Napier Herald’s .Waipawa correspondent states that the firebell there was vigorously frung at I o’clock on Tuesday morning. The fire was in the large stables at the rear of the Empire Hotel. In a few minutes from the giving of the alarm the flames had burst through the roof, and, shooting into the air, brilliantly lit up the vicinity. Many front other parts of the town thought the big hotel was ablate. At no time, however, was it in serious danger, fortunately, there was no wind, and a good supply of water being available, these two favorable conditions were made the most of by the brigade, and soon all danger of the fire’s spreading was over. It was confined to the stables, but the sample-rooms, which are under the same roof, suftered severely. These were occupied, upstairs by Arch. Clark and Sons, of Napier, and downstairs by the Northern Light Boot Company. Clark and Sons samples were damaged by heat, smoke and water, although not unpacked. The Boot Company’s samples were removed, although unpacked, without sustaining any damage. The origin o the fire is unknown, but probably 1 was a carelessly thrown match. 1 0 stables, which were destroyed, were insured in the National office for bZov, and the contents for £3O in the same office. All praise is due to the brigade for accomplishing a task which mos of those looking on thought was impossible, namely, that of confining the fire to the part of the building where it started.
