BOWLING TOURNAMENT
GISBORNE WIN ALL THEIR GAMES. LEAD IN THE AGGREGATE. H 3 JJ i ' Special to the Times. Wellington, last night. In glorious weather the Gisborne bowlers took the green at the Wellington grounds this morning, and in the dayDT*** play carried everything before them. OpeniDg against Rooky Nook, PoDsford’s riok scored 34 to their opponent's 9, whilst R. Gaudin’s team also won their game by 18 to 17. Tbe second game was against Carterton, Gisborne winning in each rink by four points. The afternoon game was againßt Karori, a suburb of Wellington, whom tho Poverty Bay representatives defeated by 62 to 18, the record so far for the tournament. The drawing and driving in Gaudin’s rink on the heavy Wellington green accounted for the sensational eoore of 42 to 7, whilst Ponsford defeated his opponents by 20 to 11. The result of th 6 day’s play gives Gisborne a lead for the aggregate with the score of 153 points. The visitors from Gisborne are agreeably surprised at the peiformaoce of the teams, which on paper do not anything like represent tho strength of the olub. Gisborne meet their old opponents, Napier, to-morrow, on the Newtown greeD, and should they retain to-day’s form the game ought to result in their favor. General disappointment was expressed in bowling circles at the absence of Mr J. A. HardiDg, President of the Northern Bowling Association, from whom a tele* gram was read at the opening ceremony. Mr T. Adair, secretary of the Gisborne Olub, reaohed Wellington this evening. The Wellington green night for the tournament at . Auckland, CarltOD, Southland, aud Wellington are the favorites for the tournament, but after to day’s play Gisborne and Remuera are given au outside ohanoe.
SOME EXCITING GAMES. (Per Press ’Association.) Wellington, last night. The Northern Bowling Association’* tournament opened this morning. The weather was capita', the sun shining brightly all day. The reoent rains had improved tho greens, and they were found to play well. The rink games ate being contested on Wellington, Thorndon, Newtown, and Victoria greens, and the pairs matches at Petone, while the singles will be commenced to morrow. In the rink games thirty two clubs are repre* sented, each by eight players. Shortly before nine o’clock the visitors and local players gathered on the Wellington green, where speeohes of weloome were made and the tournament formally opened. Play commenced shortly after-, wards, and continu:d until about six o’clock. The last game of tho day was the most exciting. It was between Southland and •' Hastings, The score stood at 41 all, and an extra head had to be played in consequence, Hastings winniog by two points in tho play off. There were a few obsss of high sooting on individual heads. One « 6 and seven s’b were made. fjiJP Another close game was between Vio-|V^ v toria and Dunedin, tbe former winning byf one point. Violoria next defeated PonEon-} by by four, and the latter were also beatsn by the earns number of points by Petqae,. The surprise of the day was on don green, where Wanganui went down^ 4 '”- to Petone by 47 points to 26. There was a close contest on the Vic toria green between Stratford and Greenmeadows, the former, winning by two j|f|| Thero were some runaway games dur-. ing the day. Gisborne for instance beat Ivarori by 42 to 7, and Carlton defeated Kelburn by 38 to 5.
