A GRIEVANCE
(Per Press Association.); Blenheim, last night. The report of Mr Short, Government Commissioner, on the hpivy haulage conditions in Marlborough has been published. The enquiry was held in November at the instance of the Marlborough Traction Engine and Machine Owners’ Union, which complained that separate license fees by local bodies practically prohibited its industry. Six Road Boards and the Blenheim Borough Council were cited to the enquiry. The Commissioner now finds that the total of fees leviable, or to be levied in Marlborough on one engine alone amounted to £llu ptr annum, or £l7O for an engine and waggons, which is far in excess of similar fees imposed in any other connty in the colony. He makes a number of suggisiions for tho alleviation of these cenditions, among them beiDg that local bodies be invited to adopt a system oflow-prioid permits, that the Counties Act be br.ught into fo c, Bnd that the presept JsgislaUon bo amended to provide for oombiued action on the part of the Jpcal authorities.
