EAST COAST NEWS.
; TOKOMARU BAY.; (From Our Own Correspondent.) December 28, A pleasant and enjsyable Chrislmas has passed all along tho Coast. A most timely rain on Sunday Hbj replenished the tanks, laid the dust, and did a lot of good everywhere. Since then the weather haß been pleasant and cool. The Boxing Day sports here were as usual a great success, and passed off without a hitch. All events were keenly contested, the ohopping contest being the chief attraction. This was won by Gannon, Anderson being second. On the following day a match was run between T. Conoll and A. Haydon for ±o aside, 100yds, and was won by the former, tho finish being a very olose one.
To-night a chopping match takes place between Taylor, of Tolsgoßay, and Anderson, of Tokomaru, for £lO aside, 18-ineh log, the contest to be in tbo hall. Yesterday we received word that tenders are being called for the now post offico. It will be quite an attractive place when erected; it is to be residence and office combined. The amount of work passing through this offiee now is just double what i-, was last year at this time. The new office will be thoroughly appreciated both by the offioia's and the public. The contract for the school has been let to Smith and Seott, but so far there is no indication of a start being made. It was hoped the new sohool would be ready for the openmg after the Christmas holidays.
SVHA!N'G'AR'A\; (Times’ Correspondent.) December 28. Chiidmas passed off here very quiet ly, nearly everyone confining themselves ana festivities to their own homes. Undoubtedly a good many would have 1-ked to eojay an outing, but the boisterous weather oi the previous day dctevrol thena. Although Cbrietmis Day opened and continued fino, peoplo had not the confidence to vonture out. The weather has been op its good behaviour since then untd_ this afternoon, when a heavy downpour visited the district, ao‘d is still continuing in heavy squalls this evening. It is to be hoped things will improve for. the New Year, as it would bo a greet disappointment to intending pleasure seokois if the holidays I turn out wet.
