Two Germans, AVolf and Vieger, have been arrested at Marseilles on a charge of- espionage. They were, according to tho authorities, directed by a member of the Consular body. The documents soized included detailed reports of practicable roads and paths leading to Italy.

An interesting document has been unearthed in the Public Works Department. It relates to the appointment in 1816 of Mr Greenaway, tho first Government architect, at a salary of buildings in Sydney aud elsewhere, some of which are stilL standing. During six years the Acting-Govern-ment paid Greenaway £615. It js estimated that if he had been paid full professional foes, he ought to have received over £II,OOO.

Two deaths from thirst are reported, A fierce storm at Croydon destroy, ed a number of buildings. 3b. ua. roofed and damaged many buildings at Golden Gate. The Catholic Church, goods sheds, and many houses were wrecked.
