There wa3 dull weather and a good ground. Newpcrt sta'-ted weakly Harper soon outran the backs and ecored* a try, which Wallace failed to convert, but. he shortly afterwards placed a goal from a pena'ty kick. The Home team then im j proved in play, and nearly * scored, even play ensuing until half-time was called — New Zealand 6, Newport 0. The second spell produced a splendid pena'ty goal, and for the remainder of the spell the Visitors were oompelled to,play a defensive game. The whistle sounded without further score.
