Christchurch, last night,

A serious assault occurred in His Lordship’s Hotel on Saturday night. A man named George Jones Prendorgast went into the bar and accostod another man named William Williams, and asked him to shout, Williams refused. Prendergast thereupon went outside for tho supposed purpose of sharpening his knife on a block of cement. He entered the bar, went up to William?, and stabbed him iu the region of the heart. The blade penetrated the clothing, but struck a rib and glanoed off. Otherwise it would have pieroed the heart, Prendergast was arrested, and oharged with wounding with intent,
