The Wanganui Christmas Carnival again premises to be a big sucoess. The attraotions include a floral fete, regatta, sailing races, for the biggest prizes ever offered in the colony, rifle shooting, swimming sports, athletic sports, and a novel equestrian display, which is being made a speciality, and promises to bo the biggest affair of the kind ever held iu the oolony. Wellington, last night.
John AndersoD, for burglary, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, with hard labor, The offence was committed at Blenheim. With reference to the Christchuroh telegram last evening to the offeot that there was friction between the Government Dairy Department aud the Chief Inspector (Mr Kinsella), the Assistant-Dairy Commissioner gives a direct contradiction, and says there is no friction whatever in the dairying division. The New Zealand Alliance report that returns to hand show the continuance vote at the looal option poll was 182,433, while the no-license voto was 199,354. The returns are not yet complete, and it is expected the no-license voto will total 200,000.
Invercargill, last night. The Magistrate, Mr MoCaitby, to-day gave judgment in an application of 26 workmen of alleged incompetency for leave to work at loss than the wage under the oarpenterß* and joiners’ awards. His Worship said it was nevrr intended that the ieoompetent workers’ clausa should enable youths to evade apprenticeship, whioh would have the effect of flooding the colony with incompetent workmen. If an applicant was working before the apprenticeship clause came into force he should have become apprenticed when that clause became part of the award. If workmen objected to the conditions it was unfair they Bhould have to compete with incompetent workmen from other lands. Twelvo permits were granted and 14 refused.
