DESPONDENT YOUNG MAN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE.

LIES IN CRITICAL CONDITION. In a lonely spot noar the loot of Gentlo Annie, and not far distant from Mr T. Craili’a property, a gruesome find wae made on Saturday evening of a young man lying prostrate with hie throat cut, medical evidence subsequently indicating that the wound must have been caused nearly 24 hours previously. The unfor« tunate young fellow, who gave hi 3 name ns Bernard Wm. Finoh, now lies in the Hospital in a critical oondition. He was found by a Maori, who carried the information by gesture to Mr Arthur Finlay, groom to Dr Scott. The latter had driven to Patutnhi, then riding on to "\Va9renga-a-hika. Mr Finlay at the t : me was putting the horse in a paddoek. He at once went to where the injured man lay, and bound h : s throat up as well as he could, meanwhile despatching the Maori for assistance to Mr T. Oraill’a. While waiting for them he supplied Finch (who was oonscious) with writing material, and tho young man supplied a fe*v particulars as to his desperate deed. He had been in search of work, and becoming despondent at not obtaining that for which he was searching, and being out of work so long, a desperate fit seized him and he sought to tike hie life. He had, it seems, tried to cut his wrists as well as his throat. Mr Craill soon arrived with assistance, and the sufferer was conveyed to the Hospital. There he wrote his name on paper. He is a single msa, and is believed to have come from Masterton. His age is little more than 21. At latest reports ho was still lying in a critical oondition.
