HARBOUR BOARD.

-—®~ " The monthly meeting of the above was hold yesterday afternoon. Presoht; The Chairman (Mr Townley), Captain Tucker, Messrs Hepburn. Clark, Wmnray, Lys. ’ - A loiter was received from the # Gisborne Sheepfarmors Freezing Ooy., pompmining of tbo unsatisfactory bortbmg ai'coms modation on the Kaiti side of the tii er.— overseer was instructed to the necessary dredging done. . . Tho Secretary was granted leave ol at). ecnco from the Bth to tho 24tb. The following report was adopted from a Committee of tho wholo Board re Alpha sawmills’ tram line; That the Board crant permission to la.V a tram I |r _ e ‘° • wharf in front of No. 3 rbod, on condrt that the Board is put to no expense in matter of strengthening tho wharf, aha tho Company to remove samei if r . cq^ 6B ‘ ed at any future time. Re By-lawei . Messrs Clark, Hepburn, Lyenar, and tho. Chart man were appointed to go into revision of tsaixio and report.

reports Mr D. McLeod, Overseer, reported | k xho John Townlcy baa taken 2o loads cf spoil to soft during the month, seven loads of which was rock. Tho blasting punt wes £ at work 17 days this month. The con. ercte filling on old portion of groyne was completed on the 30th of last month, and 17 rneu paid off. I estimate the tak'ng down and stacking of the Hercules crano at £'l2s, to bo stacked on rec amation at the back of the viaduct on the seaward sido of the Freezing Company section and t# the iron sheds. I have inspected the river improvement work done by \V. Nelson under contract to your Board, and find that the work has been done as specified and shown on plan marked M.D. 2771. One of our vertical boilers, the one that we purposo using in connection with tho small dredger, needs a new uptake P«t I bavo communicated with _Mr sharp, machinery inspector, who advises me that if I send it down to Niven and Co. he himself, as bo is living there, will see that a good job is mads of it as cheaply as possibly. The rock-cutter has boon fixed on the punt, and a trial made last Balurday morning, with the result that I am now satisfied wo may discontinue blasting. The depth of water at tho mouth of the river continues to improve, aud I havo no doubt will oontinuo to do so until there is no sand left in the river. The tota-. cost of groyne extension, less timber supplied by Mr TrounsoD, is £11,700, which I am sure must be very gratifying to your Board, more especially as it has turned out to be a complete success, This being bo, I can see nothing now to prevent your Board from entering upon a scheme of a deep-water harbor inside. Without acquir ng any of the private property on the Haiti flat, there is only sufficient space between the top end of the Haiti wharf and the bridge for berthing three largß vessels such as the Manuka, but by acqui«r*S» ing sufficient of that flat to give 30_0ft« froutage to the Wainui read would give sufficient space to provide seven such berths as shown on sketch and two small berths. With a scheme such as this in view, all future wharf work should be with Fero concrete I beg respectfully to ask you for a fortnight’s leave to go up to Auckland, partly with a view of getting an insight into the work now going on there.” It was decided to have the big crane dismantled with the objeot of selling it. The Chairman said the Board had good reason to be congratulated upon the success of the groyne work. Tenders had been declined ranging from £16,000 to £17,000, excepting one by Sellers and Son which was over £12,000. The Overseer wes granted leave to proceed to Auckland. Captain Cummiog reported :—“ The soundings taken in the channel on the 16th inst. with the new tide gauge at zero are! End of breakwater 10ft 6in, third bollard from end Sft. Snatk’s landing 6ft 2in, big crane 7ft, Waikanae 7ft, off stockyard 7ft 2in, half-way along wharf 6ft lOin. Mr Hardy, circ taker of the leading lights, wishes to resign at tho end of the month. Mr G. Humphreys would be pleased to undertake tho work, and I think he would In a suitablo man. Shipping since last month : Steamers, arrivals 24, departures 21; sailing ships, arrivals 7, departures 6, Vease’s using the wharf, 33 days, moorage . coll acted £22 10s, and in addition nearly a’l the lighters have been at work loading woo' and mutton.” Mr Humphreys appointed in plaoe of Mr Hardy. Captain Solvander reported:—“ Since your last meeting the dredge has been constantly employed, the amount dredged being 200yds from abreast of the town wharf, 200 yards from abreast of the slip, 100yds from along Haiti wharf, 1150yds sand from along the breakwater, 800yds rock from beacon to Snatk’s landing; in all, 2450 cubic yards. Mr W. B. Mackie, dredge engineer, re«

ported that the John Townley would go on the slip at tho end of the week for the half-yearly cleaning and painting. The new shaft ou the crane was working well, and everything elso was giving satisfaction.
