Sydney, Dec. 15. The Railway Commission has taken lengthy evidence for and against tho contention that coal from outside pits which was offered at a considsrably lower price was as good as’ that supplied by the Lithgow Coal Association A number of witnesses including some railway engine firemen, favored outside coal.
At tho Kauri Timber Company meeting the chairman stated that an abnormal season in Now Zealand had interfered with operations, and caused a diminution of profits ; otheiHvis o the sales were practically the same in quantity, only fi o per cent, less in value as compared with last year. The business of the timber trade throughout Australia had been very depressed. Since the Company’s year closed a decided improvement had occurred. The improved outlook, coupled with the fact that there was still £15,000 undivided profit, left a warranted recommendation for payment of the same dividend as last year.
Mr Carruthers states that he has not yet begun the fight on the Federal capital. Ho is waiting tho result of his protest. He hoped the Federal Parliament and Government would decide that the undoubted rights of New South Wales would be fairly and fully recognised.
A Federal Constitution Defence Association has been formed in Sydney. Some speakers described Mr Carruthers as the enemy of Federation.
