SECOND JURY CONVICTS IN ASSAULT CASE.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night,
At tho Supremo Court Henry Cooper Douglas, convicted of having stolen a diamond ring from a dwelling, from Mrs McNairn, at Purnell, was brought up for sentence. The prisoner’s dofence, His Honour declared, was basrd on the hope of getting the sympathy of the jury in disregard of justice. The prisoner had added to his offence the crimes of perjury and forgery, and tho modo of his defence was a grater moral offence than crimp. His procedure was quite sufficient to cauao His Honor to disregard the question of whether he had otbeewis) been entitled to probation. Ho would be sent (o prison for twelve months hard labour. Albert Jackson, sawyer, formerly ranger for Mount Albert Road Board, surrendered on bail to tak9 his re-trial on a charge of having assaulted a 16 year old girl attending tho Newmarket cookery classes lust February. The jury at first trial ( art sessions) had failed to agree on a verdict. To-day, after hearing the evidenoe the jury returned a verdict of guilty. The prisoner was remanded for sentence.
