EAST COAST NEWS.

L’OKOMARU,

.(From Our Own Correspondent. Dec. 11th.

Tho election passod off very quietly here, good feeling prevailing all through. Each side and party worked steadily all day, ovory effort was made to get all to the poll, with tho. result that a record poll was recorded in spito of the oxtra polling booths at tho back and on tho stations.

Groat praiso is duo to tho tolograph department, and our own local operator, Mr Fox, in particular for information so courteously givon after. the polling closed ; all through tho night we ivere posted up immediately tho news reached Gisborno from tho other centres, and tho local telephones wore busy all night, and few people slept in this part of the district before receiving the nows that the Government had a swooping majority, and that NoLicense had boon carried in several new electorates (the latter only to bo altered by later figures), _ Mr Lysuar paid us a visit on Monday last and spoke to a fair house, many leaving before the close of the address. I do not think he changed anyone’s opinion here.

TUPAROA,

(Times Correspondent.) Dec. 12 th.

Owing to the Tuparoa election having taken place at Waipiro Bay, aud some of tho electors not having returned from recording their votes in the No-License interest, it has rendered the task of reporting at length on the subject rather difficult. During the evening of the election day a rumor that No-License had been carried by a small majority caused a slight flutter of excitement, and a stampede took place in the direction of tho hotel, but whether the sympathies of the popu lace wore with the proprietor or with themselves, in view of the few short months that would elapse prior to the Act coming into force, it would be hard to say. The rumor proved to be promature, the probability is that some would-be proliibitors had obeyed their instructions to cross out the top line only, but in the heat of the moment had overlooked the fact that their ballot paper was upside down.

PERSONAL. A Waipiro correspondent writes askit)g why Judge Jones was superseded in his office ss Judge. Tho corn spondent goes on to refer in terms of high praiso to that official, and express’ng the deep regret of Coast peopla at the services of " so careful and able an officer being lost to the country through some departmental bungling.” Tho writer is quits in error on the subject, being no doubt, like others, misled through a little confusion caused at election time. Judge Jonss simply withdrew as President of the Tai Rawhiti Land Council, so that bis full time could be given to his work as Judgo of tho Native Laud Court and Deeds Registrar. ThL, we believe, was in accordance with the wish of tho Chief Judge.
