THE RECENT CONTEST.
(To the Editor of the Times.)
Sir, —The eleotion, which ha 3 caused so muoh excitement, so much uproar, and iu many cases so muoh unpleasantness, has cow passed, resulting so far as tbo licensing poll of Waiapu is conoernod in a majority for that side, whioh, wilh a great amount of opposition and much uphill work, had so abb and willing an advooate in our townsman, Mr W. D. Lysoar.
Mr Lysnar has a big stake in this district, and for the sake of saving that stake and that of others, and showing what effect no-lioenso had in ether districts, spent valuable timo and a considerable amount of money in proving its disastrous results. Surely a man who has done this for the benefit of the district should bo shown that his great effort, which to us was not without a gratifying result, was appreciated by the people who followed his principles and hoped to reap tho bouefit of it, not only on tfto'principlo of continnancs of license, but oJfso ou the principle of “ freedom of action of every British-born subjoct.” Mr Lysnar, like a budding slabsmnn, is following in tho then Mr Disraeli's footetsp?, in so muoh as ho has quoted his words—that tho day will come in whioh tho people will be glad that they bad listened to his words and followed his advice.
Through many difßcult r O3 and in the midst of much opposition he has proved ■ the wrongful waste of money and tho eirooeous opinions of many members of local bodies, and hence bis name of obstructionist; but in the opinion of the statutory majority of the electorate of Wajapu he has provod he is no obstructionist, but a man of ideas which are correct Has he not proved his opinions as to the water scheme? Has ho not, as already said, advocated the right cause in this district ? Therefore, I thick ho should in future be Fstened to with patience and credence when discussing ma’ters cf maritime and municipal iotecst to Gisborne and district. A man of pluck and psrseveranoc is Mr Lysnar, who in my opinion should not bs cblacked at nor {pooh-poohed a*. It is quite evident to people that under license this district is increasing commercially daily by leaps and bounds; then why try a doubtful experiment? It may be stated by tbo e who are in aotive antagonism that Mr Lysnar is alroady remunerated by tbs parties interested in this being a license district. But that sursly is a thing which would require direct proof, and such as in previous Elections could not bo forthcoming. My purposo in writing tho foregoing is to prove that it would b 3 a becoming act on our part to opoo a subscript'oa list for the purpose of presenting Mr Lysnar with a fit and proper testimonial for his laudable efforls for advancement in this district. I should havo thought the hotelkeepers of tho district, who are more directly benefitted by tho result of tho poll, would have come forward, but as they do not seem to bo doing so hence this letter. I should be glad if a few of hi 3 aajlmirerß would give their views and their Tfeos ns to tho beet way to form a committee to oerry out this proposal to a successful ending. I subscribe my name, and will bo willing in tho event of a list being opened to give a suitable donation towards it. Thanking you, Mr Editor, in anticipation.—Yours, etc., B, BOYD, Gisborne, December 12.
