August Frederick Scholtz, who swallowed pads green on Thursday night las*, died at the hospital this evening. Aa request will be held to-morrow. Christchurch, last night.

A youDg man named Alfred Henton was recently landed from the Morayshire, suffering from consumption, and was taken to Nurse Maude’s comp. It is now stated that the captain of tho Morayshire is willing to help the young man back to England, and the owners are anxious to do all they can to aid HeDtan while here, and facilitate his return Home. Invercargill, last night. The Southland Metropolitan A. and P. Show opened to-day. Aftsr a sultry 24 hours the weather was cloudy, with a southerly wind, and from 8 p.m. lain fell steadily. As usual only oattle and sheep were judged to-day, the championships going as follows: Shorthorns, bull H. Carswell, cow G. Anderson; Hereford, bull and cow J. Holmes; polled Angus, bull and cow W. Officer; Ayrshire, bull J. Campbell, cow W. Rankin; Jersey, bull A.Sma'l, cow T. Fleming. The number of exhibits in all classes except Shorthorns was disappointingly small. Sheep : Border Le’osstc-r, ram R. Graeve, ewe W. J. McCroetie; English Leicester, ram A. Murdoch, ewe W. J. Johnstono; Romney, ram and ewe T. L. Barnhall; Linoolm ram J. B- Hutton, ewe G. P. Johnston ; Shropshire ram J. S. Greeve, ewe 'T. Vach ; Cheviot ram and ewe, T. L. Barnswell ; Merino ram, W. J. Johnston. In orossbreds J. Tough and W. J. Fleming were the chief priz9-takers, and the latter also for freezing sheep and lambs. The sheep dog trial was won by J. B. Purdie, R. Anderson second, and J. Robertson third.

Last night Jas. McLean's woolshed, half-way to Bay Lake, Wukatipu, wbs destroy by fire, together with 400 Bheop in for shearing, and the wool of 300 others. The cause of the fire cannot be ascertained. Tho shed was just erected, and arrangements for insurance were in progress, but not oompleted, so that the total loss falls on Mr McLean.
