THE COMMONWEALTH.

e THE USUAL GRUMBLE ABOUT 4 FEDERATION. 0 t J MR CARRUIHERS' UNWISE ' ACTION, l J By telegraph, Press Ass’n, Copyright Received 10.17 p.m., Dec. 12. [ Sydney, Dec. 12. ’ Mr Watson, leader of the Labor party, 1 regrets Mr Oarruthers’ act ! ou on the , ground that it will intensify rather than remedy tbs bad feeling existing between 1 the States. Still he is convinced that 1 New South Wales has more to gain from Federation than any other State. New South Wa'os undoubtedly made sacrifices, but after all they are no greater proportionaly than made by other States. Mr Oook, deputy-leader of the Opposition, said that theie bad been a want of consideration for New South Wales by some of her own members. He had tried half-a-dozen times during the present session to get Parliament to consider the view point of tho State Parliament. He had been ridiculed by Sir William Lyne anl others of his friends from this State, It was fashion to blame the Victorians for all the trouble, but was unfair to do so. If the blame attaohed to anyone it was to their representatives first. Mr Brace Smith says that though maDy po'itieians deprecate Mr Carruthers’ action, he was disposed to think there was no other way of impressing on Victorian ( representatives and tho people that the i people of this State wero in earnest, Brisbane, Dec, 12. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the situation, says : We have had five i disastrous and miserable years under the regime of Federation, Those who fought f for it, voted for it, and paid for it, are j more diagustad than those who fought aga’nrt it, and now in very loud tooos our ] nearest southern neighbors are clamoring ,f for succession. They never had anything to gain by union. The marvel was they g allowed themselves to be drawn into it.
